The standardization group monitors and influences the development of standards for industrial valves.

Maritime transport and shipbuilding (SR 008)

The scope of the standardization group covers international standardization of ships and shipping and European standardization of inland waterway vessels. New standardization areas that have emerged in recent years include port automation and intelligent shipping.

The scope of ISO/TC 8/SC 26 ”Smart shipping” (secretariat China) includes:

Standardization in the field of new and advanced information and communication technologies (e.g. big data and processing, IoT, onboard sensors, artificial intelligence) in shipbuilding and maritime intelligent transport systems.

The scope of ISO/TC 8/SC 27 ”Ports and terminals” (secretariat China) includes:

Standardization in the field of ports and terminals, covering the design, implementation, operation, upgrade, decommissioning and reuse phases. It includes scheduling, planning, monitoring, control and inspection, optimization of resource allocation, integrated high-tech solutions regardless of scale, type or movement of goods or passengers, whether located on the coast or inland waterways, to improve efficiency, effectiveness, coordination, working conditions and professions to achieve sustainable development of ports and terminals.

Forestry machinery (SR 015)

The standardization group monitors and influences European and international safety and testing standards for forest machinery.

The standardization group monitors, among others, the following machines and devices:

Space and Aviation (SR 020)

The National Standardization Group participates in European and international standardization in the space and aeronautics sector. European standardization responds to the requirements of mandate M/496 to develop standards to promote European projects (between Member States, ESA and the EU), such as Galileo, GMES and satellite telecommunications and earth mapping. The aim of international standardization is to create a framework for the creation of internationally compatible systems for aircraft and spacecraft.

Also covered is the safety, operation and performance of airport equipment regarding the handling of passengers, baggage and cargo, as well as equipment for aircraft ground handling and maintenance.

Machine tools (SR 039)

The scope of the standardization group covers European and international safety standards for woodworking and metalworking machines. The standards developed within the scope of the standardization group are harmonised with the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.

Machine tools are constantly evolving towards greater precision, better productivity, higher reliability and safety, and lower environmental impact. Machine tool standards have significantly reduced trade barriers and standardized the terminology used in the machine tool industry, thereby reducing misunderstandings, ambiguities, and misleading definitions.

Refrigeration equipment and heat pumps (SR 044)

The National Standardization Group participates in the standardization of household, commercial and industrial refrigeration equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, refrigerated display cabinets and professional refrigeration equipment, the standardization of factory-made heat pumps, air conditioners, fan coil units and liquid chillers, and the standardization of mass-produced heat exchangers.

Gears and bearings (SR 060)

The standardization group SR 060 follows the ISO standardization of gears and bearings. Gear standards are related to the terminology of the industry, the definition of different tooth geometries and strength calculations. The most important standards have been translated into Finnish.

Textile and laundry machines (SR 072)

The scope of the standardization group covers European and international standards for textile machinery.

Through the group, it is possible to participate in the standardization of the subject area and in the work of the CEN and ISO committees. For now, the group is in standby mode and will be activated when Finnish participants register.

Elevators and escalators (SR 090)

The elevator standardization group SR 090 follows the CEN/ISO standardization for elevators and escalators, as well as the Nordic INSTA standardization. European elevator standards are mostly C-type machinery safety standards and are harmonized with the Lifts Directive 2014/33/EU. The EN 81 series of standards is an important tool for operators in the elevator industry in Europe.

The standardization group SR 090 serves as a discussion forum and channel of influence for elevator manufacturers, inspection bodies and authorities in matters related to elevator standardization and elevator legislation.

Finland holds the chairmanship of several CEN/ISO working groups. Finland also holds the chairmanship of the Nordic elevator standardization committee INSTA/M Hiss.

METSTA organizes an annual elevator seminar together with the Finnish Elevator Association, which extensively discusses current issues in the elevator industry.

Lifting platforms and shelving (SR 098)

The scope of the standardization group covers European and international safety standards for various lifting platforms and shelving lifts. The main tasks of the standardization group are the preparation of Finnish statements and voting responses to European and international standard proposals, the preparation of the necessary Finnish-language lifting platform standards and acting as a steering group for Finnish experts participating in European and international working groups.

Safety of machinery (SR 114)

The Safety of Machinery Standardization Group SR 114 follows horizontal machinery safety standardization. Machinery safety standards are largely harmonised standards with regard to the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. The application of harmonised machinery safety standards is voluntary, but their application guarantees the presumption of conformity.

Horizontal machinery safety standards include the A-type standard SFS-EN ISO 12100 and the B-type machinery safety standards. The B-type standards address, among other things, the following safety aspects:

Hydraulics and Pneumatics (SR 131)

The standardization group SR 131 monitors the standardization of hydraulic and pneumatic systems and components. The standardization takes place as international standardization within ISO.

General standards cover terminology, design, dimensions, safety, and testing and inspection methods.

Standardization targets include the following components: piping, connectors, seals, cylinders, valves, electro-hydraulic and electro-pneumatic components and systems, filters, compressed air dryers, hydraulic pumps, motors, fluids, control and adjustment devices, pressure tanks, pressure accumulators.

Agricultural machinery (SR 144)

The standardization group monitors and influences standards for safety, testing and electrical requirements for agricultural machinery.

The standardization group monitors the following machines and devices:

Forestry machinery is covered in standardization group SR 015 Forestry machinery. SFS is responsible for the standardization of irrigation equipment (ISO/TC 23/SC 18).

Rubber, plastic and leather products machinery (SR 145)

The scope of the standardization group covers European standards for machinery used in the manufacture of footwear, leather and artificial leather products.

Waste compactors and packaging machines (SR 146)

The national standardization group participates in standardization at the European level in the following areas:

At the international level, the committee’s responsibilities include the standardization of machinery and equipment for waste management, recycling and cleaning of public areas. In addition, the standardization group develops standards covering products, operating methods and safety requirements for the collection, transport, storage and transfer of solid and liquid waste. The standardization does not cover the recovery, treatment and disposal of sludge or the reuse of water.

Cranes (SR 147)

The scope of the standardization group covers European and international crane standards. European crane product standards have been harmonized with the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and the standards will also be harmonized with the new EU Machinery Regulation (2023/1230).

The previous mandate of the CEN Crane Secretariat has been replaced by the Machinery Regulation standardisation request C(2025)129 and the new scope for the development of harmonised standards is:

Standards and deliverables on control and safety requirements for design, calculation, stability criteria for the construction, installation, security systems, maintenance and verification, as far as applicable, for: lifting devices; lifting platforms and mobile machines with one or more mobile elevating work platforms for the lifting of persons, which can be equipped with interchangeable equipment designed for handling of goods; lifting appliances (installed temporarily or permanently) such as cranes, power driven winches and hoists, and hand powered lifting machines for goods lifting and/or the lifting of persons; load manipulating devices; lifting accessories, such as non-fixed load lifting attachments, slings, shackles, eyebolts; lifting media for slings and lifting appliances, such as welded round steel link chains, steel wire ropes, textile ropes and webbing; continuous handling equipment; systems for unit loads and bulk materials; equipment and systems for pneumatic handling of bulk materials; as well as equipment for the storage of bulk materials.

Conveyors (SR 148)

The standardization group monitors standards for conveyor systems and belts, which address the safety and EMC compatibility of bulk and piece goods conveyors, bulk goods storage, and checkout belts.

Forklifts (SR 150)

The scope of the standardization group covers both powered and manual forklifts (such as forklifts, reach trucks, driverless forklifts, tow trucks, rough terrain forklifts and pallet trucks) and their components, with the exception of forklifts primarily intended for earthmoving or road transport.

Construction and mining machinery (SR 151)

The standardization group actively monitors and influences, among other things, safety, testing and noise standards regarding construction, earthmoving and mining machinery.

Food machinery (SR 153)

The subject area covers the hygiene and safety of machinery and equipment in the food industry. These concern employees, end customers and the environment. The subject area includes machinery from the industrial processing of food raw materials onwards. The subject area does not include agricultural machinery or food packaging machinery.

Lifting accessories (SR 168)

The standardization group SR 168 follows the CEN/ISO standardization related to lifting accessories. Lifting accessories include, among others, steel ropes, steel rope terminations and steel rope slings, lifting chains and textile slings. Lifting accessories are covered by the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. Most lifting accessory standards have been harmonized with the Machinery Directive.

Fasteners, tools and ladders (SR 185)

The standardization group is responsible for standards related to threads and fasteners, as well as tools and ladders.

Heat treatment equipment (SR 186)

The scope of the standardization group includes standards dealing with the terminology, safety requirements, and calculation methods for energy balance and efficiency of industrial heat treatment equipment and oil and gas burners.

Pumps (SR 197)

The scope of the standardization group covers the standardization of safety and all other aspects of pumps and pumping machines for liquids (including machines whose main function is based on pumps).

Paper and printing machinery (SR 198)

The standardization group SR 198 monitors European standardization for paper machines and printing machines. The standards developed by the technical committees are C-type machinery safety standards. The standards developed by the committee CEN/TC 198 are harmonized with the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.

The scope of the standardization group SR 227 includes the standardization of metallic springs.

Compressors (SR 232)

The scope of the standardization group covers the standardization (safety and other characteristics) of compressors and vacuum pumps for air and all gases, with the exception of hermetic motor compressors used in refrigeration and heating systems, as well as standardization of compressed air quality and processing equipment.

Cable railways (SR 242)

The scope of the standardization group covers European safety standards for cable railways.

Surface treatment equipment (SR 271)

The scope of the standardization group includes standards for safety requirements for surface treatment equipment for organic coatings (paints, varnishes and similar products). The standards cover, among other things, pre-treatment and coating plants, coating equipment, material feeding equipment and equipment used for drying varnishes.

Hazardous areas, ATEX (SR 305)

The scope of the standardization group covers horizontal basic standardization on the design of equipment (other than electrical equipment) and protective systems intended for use in explosive atmospheres (e.g. design principles, ignition risk assessment, functional safety of protective systems and various protective structures and protective systems necessary for explosion protection) and standardization on test methods for the ignition properties of substances (ignition, explosion propagation, explosion effects, etc.).

Robotics and Automation Systems (SR 310)

The scope of the standardization group covers, among other things, European and international standards for industrial robots. The standardization group also actively monitors and influences the standardization of industrial automation and data.

Centrifuges (SR 313)

The scope of the standardization group includes the standardization of general safety requirements for centrifuges intended for the separation of liquids or solids and with a kinetic energy of at least 200 Nm.

Transport wheels (SR 324)

The scope of the standardization group covers the standardization of technical requirements, testing, dimensioning and terminology for general-purpose (non-vehicle) transport wheels, including related accessories and peripherals.

Bicycles (SR 333)

The scope of the standardization group includes the following aspects of bicycles (including electrically assisted bicycles) and their accessories:

”Bicycle” means a vehicle with two wheels and propelled entirely or mainly by the muscular effort of the persons riding it, using pedals.

NOTE: Chains, gear profiles, rims, tires, valves and bicycles intended as toys are not included in the scope of group SR 333.

Vehicles for non-road use (SR 354)

The scope of the standardization group covers the standardization of safety requirements for ride-on motorized vehicles that are not subject to type approval. The power source can be an internal combustion engine or an electric motor. Such vehicles include, for example, recreational and utility ATVs, go-karts, balance scooters, electric scooters and snowmobiles. The scope of the standardization group does not cover vehicles that are intended solely for competition use.

Ecodesign (SR 406)

Ecodesign standardization is based on the ERP Directive (2009/125/EU Energy Related Products Directive).

Stage Technology (SR 433)

The scope of the standardization group covers European standards related to entertainment and stage technology.

Industrial mixers (SR 458)

Industrial mixers are currently used in many different industries, from the chemical industry to the food industry, pharmaceutical industry, mining and paper industry. The latest measurement methods and numerical models are used in the design and manufacture of industrial mixers.
